The places that make Valsassina special

A journey through traditions, nature and breathtaking landscapes in Valsassina

Margno

The first village you encounter when travelling along the road connecting Taceno to Upper Valsassina is Margno, best known for the Pian delle Betulle cable car. Staying in Margno allows you to enjoy the fresh mountain air and experience the peaceful, welcoming atmosphere of the village.
Pian delle Betulle is an ideal destination for families and for those who want to immerse themselves in nature with gentle forest walks; as an alternative to a picnic on the vast green meadows, there are some restaurants at Pian delle Betulle perfect for a family lunch together. Even in winter this location is a true paradise, thanks to the opportunities for ski mountaineering, snowshoeing, and sledging.

Casargo is situated in a flat basin framed by the Orobic Prealps. Especially in the summer months, it is a lively village rich in events and celebrations. The cycle path and playground become ideal meeting places for families and children; on the surrounding mountains you discover breathtaking views and walks suitable for everyone.
In particular, Alpe di Paglio and Alpe Giumello are two locations particularly appreciated by locals and visitors thanks to their immense green pastures, refuges and restaurants — and especially at Giumello for its incredible high‑altitude view over Lake Como. Both alpine pastures are recommended in both summer and winter.

Located at 1,000 m above sea level in the heart of the Orobic Prealps of upper Valvarrone, Premana is known especially for its artisanal tradition linked to the production of scissors and knives. The village offers a wide and varied territory to discover. There are numerous trails and agro‑forestry‑pastoral roads, suitable both on foot and by mountain bike, that connect Premana to the alpine pastures — lively and welcoming especially in the summer months — and to the eateries and mountain refuges found in its valleys.
Staying in Premana means exploring a new, fascinating and wild territory throughout the year; tasting local dishes in the area’s refuges; discovering the historic centre, traditions and centuries‑old history of the village. In Premana two important events take place: the Giir di Mont and Premana Revives the Ancient.

Here you will also find some bars and restaurants where you can refresh yourself together after your walks. There is also a little mountain chapel overlooking Valsassina — a peaceful panoramic spot.
The road to reach Alpe di Paglio is also passable in winter and the wide meadow in the alpine pasture is ideal for an open‑air picnic or for having fun on the snow with a sled.

There are numerous walks of varying difficulty that can be enjoyed both in summer and in winter with ski mountaineering or snowshoes. From here you can also reach Monte Cimone, at 1,800 m above sea level — a peak of moderate difficulty that offers a fantastic view of our mountains, stretching as far as Monte Rosa!

The landscape is characterised by wide pastures interspersed with dense woods — ideal for gathering chestnuts or searching for mushrooms. In the summer months Ronco enjoys a cool, pleasant climate and a particularly relaxing atmosphere: ideal for families and for those who need a break from the daily hustle, immersing themselves in nature.
There are also numerous walks and hikes possible from Ronco: Rifugio Ombrega, Alpe Paglio, Forni Valley… The pasture is reachable by car; some mountain huts only with short walks through the greenery.
